DescriptionHivos' advocacy strategy is twofold: we use opportunities to influence donor countries, the European Union, the World Bank - and if relevant others - to (financially) support decentralised, renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions that suit all people, including the poor. But we also support and work with NGOs in developing countries to advocate for an increased support for renewable energy access in remote locations. In East Africa, Southern Africa, Central America and Indonesia, Hivos and its partners bring together civil society organisations working on energy access. They develop joint strategies to influence governments and donors, identify problems and come up with policies and activities to scale up existing renewable energy successes. Sustainable Energy Hivos actively supports the UN goal of universal access to sustainable energy by 2030. We especially applaud the multi-stakeholder approach, involving governments, the private sector and civil society. Hivos calls for measures that address all energy needs, through the grid, off-grid and clean cooking solutions. Decentralised renewable energy is the key to give the billions of people living in remote areas access to clean, affordable and reliable energy. Hivos' role in the huge challenge of Sustainable Energy for All (SE4all) is to be a driving force for innovation, policy changes and CSO-involvement. We support, stimulate and sometimes provoke governments, the private sector and civil society organisations to come up with real solutions and be creative in ways to provide access to energy for all. We co-create and cooperate with all relevant stakeholders in the (renewable) energy sector. Hivos serves as an ideal broker: we cooperate and feel comfortable in working with grassroots organisations as well as with governments, banks and major donors. Iconic Projects Iconic Projects are bold Hivos initiatives that showcase how people can take charge of their own development - aided by a supply of 100% renewable energy. These initiatives are models for multi-stakeholder projects that can be replicated in other comparable areas of the world. For a large and ambitious project on sustainable energy, like Iconic Island Sumba, it is crucial to get all the stakeholders involved all levels: local, national and international, engaging villagers, politicians, businesses and NGOs.
