      The forestry and bioenergy research at VTT covers the whole biomass production and utilization chain from production and handling to refining woody biomass, combustion, gasification and liquefaction of biomass fuels including environmental and techno-economic studies.
      The goals of VTT’s biomass production research and development work are e.g. to decrease harvesting, handling and transportation costs and to improve the quality of solid biofuels, to develop pellet production and handling technology and to develop methods for fuel ash utilization as a forest fertilizer. VTT examines the pyrolysis of solid fuels and waste as well as the elimination of the solids in the produced liquid biofuel and its storage stability.
